Here’s how the conferences stack up now that the regular season is behind us:

    1 - Southeastern (34.0833333333333)
    2 - Big East (35)
    3 - Pacific-10 (39.2)
    4 - Atlantic Coast (41)
    5 - Big 12 (44.8333333333333)
    6 - FBS Independent (55.3333333333333)
    7 - Big Ten (55.6363636363636)
    8 - Mountain West (75.8888888888889)
    9 - Conference USA (76.0833333333333)

    11 - Mid-American (85.6923076923077)
    12 - Sun Belt (101.333333333333)

Ouch. It hurts to be a Big Ten fan. It’ll be interesting to see what happens after the bowl games.

  • my bcs bowl projections v. reality

So, in this post, I made some BCS bowl projections based on my ranking system as of week 7. Now that the bowl matchups are public knowledge, let’s compare!

    National Championship Game
    My projection: Alabama v. Texas
    Reality: Alabama v. Texas
    Ding ding ding! Woohoo!

    Rose Bowl
    My projection: Iowa v. Oregon
    Reality: Ohio State v. Oregon
As a diehard Northwestern fan, I was elated when my Wildcats dethroned the undefeated Hawkeyes, even if it did mean that my projection of them getting through the Big Ten unscathed and smelling the roses at season’s end wound up being false. I did predict the last man standing in the messy Pac-10 race though. That’s something, right?

    Orange Bowl
    My projection: Miami v. Pitt
    Reality: Iowa v. Georgia Tech
At first glance, it looks like a massive fail. But I did project both the Hawkeyes and the Yellow Jackets making it to BCS bowls, correct? Just not this one.

    Sugar Bowl
    My projection: Florida v. TCU
    Reality: Florida v. Cincinnati
Nailed the Gators, and TCU is BCS-bound, so not all that bad.

    Fiesta Bowl
My projection: USC v. Georgia Tech
Reality: TCU v. The Donks, er, I mean Boise State
LOL. USC. LOL. At least I didn’t have them going to the Rose Bowl.

Okay, analysis time. I got 7/10 teams correct, 4/10 teams in the correct game, and 1/5 matchups correct. Let’s compare with the week 7 projections from the ESPN analysts that get paid to do this, Mark Schlabach and Pat Forde.
Schlabach: 7/10 teams, 4/10 teams in correct game, 2/5 matchups. Just beat me by a nose.
Forde: 7/10 teams, 3/10 teams in correct game, 0/5 matchups. Woohoo! Take that, Pat Forde! Your football analysis skills can kneel before my Perl scripts! Muahaha!

    Ahem. ‘Scuse me.

  • college basketball poll - week 4

Unfortunately, the NCAA statistics website isn’t consistent between all the various sports, and while I can get a nice Perl-ready .csv of all the Division I-A football scores this season, no such .csv exists for Division I men’s basketball. There’s a .pdf, but I didn’t really feel like dealing with that. I’m sure it’s possible, since Perl is amazing and everything, but whatever. So, instead, I’m getting my basketball scores from Massey Ratings.

Other than that, the formula is the same as my football poll, explained here. I don’t really have any commentary, as I haven’t quite left college football mode yet. So here it is:

    1 - Duke (7-1) (53.02734375)
    2 - Purdue (7-0) (52.19921875)
    3 - Syracuse (8-0) (48.59375)
    4 - Villanova (8-0) (47.26806640625)
    5 - Connecticut (6-1) (45.6640625)
    6 - William & Mary (6-2) (44.92529296875)
    7 - Kansas St (7-1) (44.45458984375)
    8 - Wisconsin (6-1) (43.796875)
    9 - Kentucky (8-0) (43.5390625)
    10 - Vanderbilt (6-1) (42.985107421875)
    11 - Florida (8-0) (42.16796875)
    12 - West Virginia (5-0) (42.1640625)
    13 - North Carolina (7-2) (42.0546875)
    14 - Missouri St (7-0) (41.4715576171875)
    15 - Mississippi (7-1) (40.967529296875)
    16 - Ohio St (7-1) (40.7557373046875)
    17 - New Mexico (8-0) (39.6673278808594)
    18 - Harvard (6-2) (39.54296875)
    19 - Texas Tech (8-0) (39.326171875)
    20 - Gonzaga (6-2) (38.8046875)
    21 - Texas A&M (7-1) (38.63330078125)
    22 - Washington (6-1) (38.61328125)
    23 - Notre Dame (8-1) (38.50341796875)
    24 - Clemson (7-2) (38.21875)
    25 - Miami FL (8-1) (38.0859375)

I’m not going to bother with directed graphs since there’s like 300 Division I teams.

  • college football poll - week 14

Here it is, the final regular season poll! Sadly, no new poll until after the MNC game. Although, I do have a basketball poll in the works!

So basically, the Bearcats got robbed. They’re no longer #1 – ‘Bama’s win over the Overrators (like that?) was enough to move the Tide back to numero uno – but in my poll they’re a very solid number two.

    1 - Alabama (13-0) (42) (2)
    2 - Cincinnati (12-0) (41.59375) (1)
    3 - Texas (13-0) (39.25) (4)

  • college football poll - week 13

The SEC invades the top 5! Florida’s thrashing of the ‘Noles and LSU’s OT win over Arkansas move them up to #3 and #5, respectively.

  • college football poll - week 12

After most of the season at #1, the Tide drops to #2 after playing I-AA Chattanooga, paving the way for the Bearcats to move to #1. The undefeated Texas teams hold at #3 and #5, respectively, while the Ducks move to the #4 spot after a thrilling 2OT win over Arizona. And Florida? Still overrated.

A win against the Sun Devils isn’t enough to keep Oregon from sliding down to #7. Texas claims the Ducks’ old #3 spot, while the Wannstache’s win over the Domers moves Pitt to #4. TCU’s besting of the Utes is good enough for #5. Oh, and the Gators are still overrated.

Argh, will the Washington effect never end? The 3-5 Huskies still haunt me at #25. Despite a bye week, ‘Bama’s past victims did well enough to keep the Tide in the top spot. Oregon’s domination of USC does enough to move the Ducks to #2, and I finally give the Bearcats some love after they unseat . . . Syracuse? Oh, and the Gators and Longhorns, those teams everyone else has in the top two spots? Overrated!

  • geek code -- then and now

When I made the last post, I had completely forgotten that I had made the exact same post over nine years ago! Let’s run down and see how my geekiness has changed over the past decade (and witness me switch between referring to myself in the first and third persons with reckless abandon!):

Type of Geek: My 19-year-old self was a geek of math and music! My 28-year-old self is a geek of only math. (However, had I compiled the more recent code by hand, as my 19-year-old self had done, rather than via the Geek Code Generator, which doesn’t allow multiple geekhoods, this would have remained unchanged.)
    Dress: unchanged
    Shape: unchanged
Age: Not surprisingly, I did age 9 years during the last 9 years!
    Computers: unchanged
    Unix: unchanged
Perl: My 19-year-old self had no idea what Perl was, but still had put P+ down ‘cause he thought it was cool. Although I went years thinking it was inferior to PHP (and it very well might be for internet applications), I am now officially in love with it. I use Perl every chance I can get.
Linux: My 19-year-old self dual-booted Red Hat with Windows 98, but spent most of his time in Doze so he could play Quake 3 with his buddies. My 28-year-old self dual-boots Ubuntu and Windows XP, but only logs into Windows every 6 months or so after a few beers to reactivate his Dark Age of Camelot accounts. His laptop runs only Linux.
Emacs: Massive swing here. My 19-year-old self grew accustomed to using vi thanks to Red Hat not agreeing with my ATI vid card and spending hours editing xorg.conf. My 28-year-old self basically lives in Emacs.
World Wide Web: Heh, it’s been awhile since I’ve seen the “World Wide” in front of the “Web”. Silly 1996. Most of Christendom would be W+ these days. Basically unchanged (W to W**+).
USENET News: My 19-year-old self had relatively recent memories of spending hours perusing rec.arts.comics.dc.universe. My 28-year-old self has only very vague memories of spending hours perusing rec.arts.comics.dc.universe.
USENET Oracle: My 19-year-old self apparently knew what this was, or at least had the good sense to Google it. Er, Altavista it. Or Webcrawler it. Whatever the heck he used back then. My 28-year-old self has completely no idea what this is and couldn’t be bothered to Google it.
    Kibo: unchanged
    Windows: unchanged
OS/2: My 19-year-old self refused to participate in this category. My 28-year-old self, again forced by the software he used to generate the code, was forced to pick the thing least unlike what his answer actually was.
Macintosh: My 19-year-old self lived in a dorm with a myriad annoying theater majors with multicolored iMacs. My 28-year-old self thinks Macs are kinda neat.

    To be continued…
