• it's march 14th....

    Happy Pi Day!

  • whimper

Few thing makes me feel as helpless as I do when I lose my TiVo remote.

  • guess i know how i'll be wasting away my life in 2007

  • hump day

It’s Wednesday! That means it’s time for comic book reviews!!

    • JSA Classified \#9. Jay Garrick is forced to kill a man to save the JSA! Now that's a wacky good comic book story. Don Kramer's art is perfect for this title, although I don't think Champagne's inks quite did him justice this issue.
    • Action Comics \#836. The Krypton of Earth-2's universe, John Byrne's Krypton, and Mark Waid's Krypton side-by-side? Superman names himself, not Lois? Supes and Batman blackmail Luthor? Doomsday doesn't really live up to his name? Dr. Light is sent to the Phantom Zone? Jimmy Olsen in a purple leotard? OMGWTF. Adventures \#649 better have some answers next week or my head will explode.
    • Justice \#4. Quite frankly, if this comic book was nothing but Lex Luthor and Sinestro trading pie recipes, I'd still buy it just to drool over the Alex Ross art. Basically, the entire issue is just one big cliffhanger. Lex and friends have taken over, and our favorite heroes are all royally screwed one way or another. Definitely has me waiting to see what'll happen next.

All in all, a great week. Keep it up, DC!

  • as big as your head!

Ever since I was probably in high school, I’ve had this big plastic cup I got at La Bamba. In college, I started keeping it in my bedroom and filling it up with water to keep myself hydrated while i studied/gamed/etc. Well sad news. It has this big ol’ split in the side and it starts dripping all over the place when I fill it up. I figure I probably stepped on it while stumbling to turn off my alarm one morning. Sadly, it’s time to retire The La Bamba Cup.

  • do the monster mash

This is a fun little diversion.

  • ooh purty pitchers

So my computer has slowly morphed over time from the original Gateway that I bought six and a half years ago before I started my freshman year of college. Up until today, four parts remained the same: my floppy drive, my LAN card, my speakers, and my monitor. Well, knock that number down to three. As an early birthday present, I treated myself to a new 19 inch LCD monitor. It’s oh so amazing.

  • kal-l, whiney telepaths, pimpin' kiffar, and you

So… might as well have some purpose for this blog. I’ll try my hand and writing comic reviews. I had to work Wednesday night, so I didn’t get a chance to pick up this week’s pull until yesterday.

    • Superman \#226. Very sweet. The first page of non-Benes art kinda threw me. I thought it was just another page of ads, but lo and behold, childhood pics of baby Kal-L of Earth-2! As a sucker for alternate timelines, I enjoyed this ish thoroughly, as I did...
    • JSA \#82. More Earth-2 Superman! Keep that Kal-L goodness coming, I'm loving it!
    • Teen Titans \#32. Mostly just a rehash of Infinite Crisis \#4, so it gets a "meh" rating, highly unusual for this title. The one redeeming quality was it looks like Johns is up to his old continuity-fixin' tricks with the Doom Patrol. Looking forward to seeing where that leads.
    • JLA \#125. Finally, this title ends. It lost its spark a long time ago, and I wonder every month why I keep it on my pull list. This past arc of the Key whining about having to listen to millions of people's thoughts and Ollie feeling bad for himself for cheating on Manitou Raven has been a big yawn-fest for yours truly. Bring on Brad Meltzer!
    • Star Wars Republic \#83. Man, am I sad to see this title go. I've been loving this era and its great cast. Seeing Quin survive thanks to Villie's trickery at the end produced an audible yelp of glee as I turned the page. At least my Ostrander/Duursema Star Wars fix will be satiated when Legacy rolls around here in a few months.
    • Star Wars Empire \#39. Finally learning out who Tank is and seeing a Duros named Mouse in stormtrooper armor have been pretty fun. Oh, and hot chicks in Imperial officer uniforms are always good. But other than that, Empire's been mostly "meh" recently. What Dark Horse really needs to do in the new Rebellion series is bring back Jaxxon!

In other news, I’ve been accepted into one graduate program so far. Huzzah!

  • see you in the funny papers

A fixture on this site has often been the comics page. While growing up, my morning routine normally included reading certain comics in the Columbus Dispatch while eating my cereal before I went out to wait for the school bus. Despite my lack of Dispatch-ness in college, I eventually kept the tradition alive by programming first a Javascript and then a PHP page featuring a selection of my favorite toons. The current incarnation has actually been online longer than the current incarnation of this blog, but this is the first time I’ve ever actually linked to it. Sadly, some of my favorites, such as Zits, are unavailable. Somebody decided it would be a good idea to deny access to King Features cartoons from all but a select few servers. All you get is this obnoxious message.

  • uncle sam wants yo' money

So apparently, since I earned less than $7000 in the state of Virginia in 2005, I can get a refund for any Virginia income tax withheld. However, since all they withheld was 19 cents, I don’t think it’s quite worth it.
